A Shared Future Beyond Wad Madani’s Violence

The escalating violence in Wad Madani and its outskirts, targeting southern Sudanese citizens, is both alarming and unacceptable. These grave security breaches necessitate immediate action to bring perpetrators to justice and prevent future atrocities. Documented evidence calls for an international investigation into these violations. Responsibility for this unrest lies with the military leadership, particularly General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, whose refusal to engage in dialogue with General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (RSF) and endorsement of extremist groups like the Bara’a Battalions exacerbate the conflict. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF have caused immense suffering for the civilian population.

These incidents, however, do not reflect the values or spirit of Sudanese people. Acts of violence by extremist factions tarnish the image of Sudan, perpetuating divisions between the North and South. Groups like the Muslim Brotherhood exploit these events to deepen societal fractures, yet their extremist ideologies are far removed from the principles of Islam. Their role in the country’s division is undeniable, and they continue to undermine peace and unity.

South Sudanese citizens, renowned for their generosity and hospitality, have welcomed their northern brothers and sisters, forming a bond that must not be broken. These ties are crucial for envisioning a harmonious future. Unity between the two nations is vital, as advocated by Sudanese visionary Ustaz Mahmoud Mohamed Taha. He believed that attempts to divide Sudan and South Sudan are destined to fail. His wisdom encourages both nations to rise above conflict and embrace shared prosperity.

The deep cultural connections between the North and South, highlighted by poetic expressions of unity, remind us of the strength in solidarity. As the South Sudanese poet Abdel Moneim Abdel Hai eloquently wrote:
“To the son of the North, I gave my heart,
And to the son of the South, I held close with my very being.”

This bond symbolizes the enduring spirit of brotherhood. It is crucial to nurture this unity, resist divisive forces, and uphold a vision of peace for future generations.

The message calls for rejecting the violence perpetrated in the name of religion and embracing humanity’s shared values of compassion and coexistence. By standing united, Sudan and South Sudan can overcome the challenges of extremism and conflict, paving the way for a brighter future for both nations. May both nations find protection and strength to resist the evils of religious fanaticism and build a future based on mutual respect and understanding.
